birfday #3

Yesterday was Thing1's 3rd birthday. This was the first year he had any clue what was going on and he started demanding his birthday and presents sometime last week. The boy got his first taste of cake and tons of presents. I got 2 cupcakes and tons of pictures. Dad got to play with the new toys.

"Ooooh, a box!"

He got lots of educational toys including preschool workbooks, vintage 1960 Hi Ho! Cherry-O, a Tornado Tube & Fuzzy Fingers (so he stops stealing my duster), puzzles, and much more.

he was hesitant at first but it didn't take him long to come around

Hula Hoop fun. Too bad it's toddler-sized.

*%^# happens

All my life I've been klutzy. My family calls me Spill Queen (also Wendy Whiner but thats a story for a different day). I'm learning to take burned fingers, stubbed toes, and broken wine glasses in stride. When the boys cry over spilled milk I tell them, "It's okay. It happens." So today when the two year old had a blond moment and his plate ended up in the trash I just told him that it was okay and he replied, "It happens."

out of the mouths of babes

Large generally only comes on weekends because a 45 minute drive to school isn't really practical but he has been here a lot since his summer vacation started last month so we have all gotten used to having him around every day. Unfortunatly he and his mother left last night for a month in Alaska visiting family. We tried explaining to Medium that his brother was going far away for a long time but who knows how much a 2 year old who still speaks incoherently half the time really gets and since he didn't get to go with Dad to drop Large off at the airport he was pretty much clueless as evidenced by out conversation this afternoon...

Medium: Where brother?
Me: He went far, far away on a plane with his mommy.
Medium: WHAT?!?
Me: On vacation to Alaska.
Medium: What da heck! When dis happen?
(we can thank Big Brother for the colorful language)

Harry Plopper

We have been on a Harry Potter kick lately. We had been waiting to purchase a boxed set but Target had the BluRays on sale this weekend for an irresistible price. We've watched them all over the last few days. Some of them twice. Never having been exposed to the franchise before (unless you count me watching them while I was in labor with him), Medium is now obsessed. He and Large have been running around the house brandishing makeshift magic wands.

A few weeks ago I instituted the British practice of afternoon tea. We have long eaten 4 meals daily and I was at a loss as to what I should call the extra one. Considering that we usually have (decaf) tea and sandwiches Tea seemed the right thing to call it. Today, just for fun, as I was fixing his green tea I spoke to him in an English accent. He got a huge smile on his face and said to me, "Hey! That's Harry Potter!"

toddler talk

What is it that makes all kids say pasghetti? I didn't see any memos or anything.

How is potty training going, you ask?

The kid will sit on the toilet for an hour, pee several times, then get off only to go hide behind a curtain and poop in his diaper. Although he sits on the thing every day I can count on 1 finger how many times he has pooped in the toilet.
