I cut the kid's hair the other day and he looked in the mirror and said, "Ooooh, that's fresh!"
Then again as Dad was carrying him off to bed he touched his head, did a Justin Bieber, and said, "My hair is fresh."
I swear I didn't tell him to say that.

I once swore than I would never talk baby talk to my kids. Now I'll do anything to see the baby smile. Sometimes I make friends with people in line at the grocery store just to communicate with another adult.
Once upon a time I didn't even get to the bar until 11. Now I'm almost certainly in bed. I used to go to bed at sunrise. Now I'm up at 6:15 to nurse the baby. Even if I can get him to go back to sleep I'm too awake to sleep myself. And the two year old is up by then anyway.
I spent this beautiful Friday evening not playing beer pong or BBQing something marinated in beer or out dancing with friends (again, with beer) but barricaded in my shower (no beer involved) with the bedroom door and the bathroom door locked (for extra protection against tiny invaders). And still I found myself with bath toys underfoot. Such is parenting.
I feel very lucky to be able to spend my day at home with my kids but the downside of being a stay at home mom is that I stay at home. So next time you're in the area around seven stop by and hang out with my kids while I go have a martini. Pretty please?

Like most kids Thing1 has developed an aversion vegetables and occasionally requires incentive to eat anything green despite the fact that I know he loves spinach, peas, asparagus, etc. My coercion generally takes the form of time in front of the boob tube but lately even that seems to have lost some of it's appeal. Yesterday, much to my chagrin, I stooped to offer candy in exchange for eating his green beans. I had a feeling that this would lead to some adorable pictures so I readied my iPhone and handed him 1/4 of an orange Starburst (starting small). What follows is his reaction to his very first candy experience.
I think that at first he wasn't really a fan of the tanginess then when it got stuck to his teeth as candy often does he just had no idea what to do. All in all he liked it but I think he much prefers watching TV as a reward and if it keeps him off the sugar for a few more years, I'm not going to complain.

There's a mouse in my house.

Like any toddler, Thing1 likes to show off his knowledge of animal sounds. Recently I told him that a mouse says squeak squeak. Because he is smart I only had to tell him once. Or maybe because he is almost 3 and he should know what a mouse says by now so I was just slacking. Anywho...
The other day I was rocking the baby in the rocking chair when it started squeaking. Curious, Thing1 asked me what the noise was I told him it was the rocking chair. "It goes squeak squeak like a mouse."
The next time I sat down to rock Thing2 it started squeaking again and Thing1 got down on the floor to look under the rocking chair. When I asked him what on earth he was doing he told me, "I can't see him!" I, of course, asked who he couldn't see. His reply? "I can't see mouse!"

Today Thing1 was begging for my lunch as he often does. This time he got creative.
Tofu, tofu, I want tofu
I love tofu, I love tofu, I love tofu
(I caved and gave him a bite and he belted out the last verse)
I love CURRY!
I swear, only a vegan child...

On the long drive to Hilo Friday I was complaining to The Husband about Thing1's name. We gave him a Hawaiian name thinking it would be unique but as fate would have it we were destined to move to Hawaii and his name turned out to be quite common here. We may as well have named him Mike or Chris or Jason. It wasn't a conversation I would have thought a 2 year old would be able to follow but the next day he started insisting we call him by his middle name. We didn't really take him seriously at first but he's still telling us that he prefers his middle name. We had a powwow about it last night and came to the conclusion that it won't hurt anything to humor him. While it feels a little strange to start calling him something different after almost 3 years, it's a small thing to make him happy.

We are in Hilo for the weekend for Uncle John's college graduation. At home they have bunk beds so the big boys are taking the opportunity to jump on the hotel room bed. All of a sudden Medium stops and grabs his leg then makes an OUCH face. Large and I look at him, alarmed, but Medium only sits down and leans over to kiss his own leg. To make it better.

Here is a song that Thing1 made up this morning while I was in the kitchen getting breakfast and Abassador Jenkins (aka Jenny) was hopping about underfoot.
She's Jenny
She's Jenny
You step on her little toes
Say OOPS!

You step on her little toes

We are out of cereal and I wouldn't want to chance the husband in the kitchen with a spatula and a frying pan. I figure we should let the Fire Department have the day off. Needless to say I didn't expect breakfast in bed so when the 2 year old crawled into my bed this morning I just asked for coffee. 5 minutes later I dragged myself down the hall to find Thing1 hauling a chair from the dining room to the kitchen like we do when he helps me bake. Unfortunately, he was hindered by the dining room rug. Or perhaps that was fortunate as who knows what kinds of mess I would have walked in to find had he succeeded. I told him not to worry about it and he gave up on the chair but, not to be easily dissuaded, he walked into the kitchen to poke his head in the fridge. He dug around in there then hollered, "I can't see it!" Unfortunately for the vertically challenged, we keep the coffee in the freezer.

You know you play too many video games when the 2 year old spills his food and goes "HA HA fail!"
